*TOP 10 ALERT*
During the Depression a man in the South is convicted of murder and sent to death row. While on death row the true nature of John Coffey (like the drink, just not spelled the same) is revealed. I put this one right next to The Shawshank Redemption (1994) as an awesome Stephen King story. This was my first taste of Sam Rockwell (see also Galaxy Quest (1999)) who is rapidly becoming a favorite player of mine. This is also the movie that proved to me what an utter sham the Academy Awards are as it lost to American Beauty (1999) as Best Picture.
This is one of the few truly awesome movies to date with rock solid delivery from all players. Hard not to be touched by this one so yes you will need tissues. Universally recommended. -(some of the language is not suitable for children)-
This is one of those movies where I regret reading the book first because I know then I would have appreciated the movie so much more if I had not. My third fav Stephen King, not sure if he can ever top Shawshank.
